The Yucca Gloriosa 'Lone Star' is one of the hardiest yuccas and can stay outdoors all year round. This Lone Star of 90 cm has a broad crown of wild, slightly curved leaves. It is full and sturdy, and it can really take a few knocks. Within our collection of yuccas and palm lilies, this is the one for anyone who wants volume straight away.
At 90 cm it already has a strong presence, but it does not take over an entire corner of your garden. The blue-green leaves have a southern look. That works especially well next to ornamental grasses and other Mediterranean plants. It also looks great next to the driveway or in a large planter on the patio. For a balcony or a smaller pot, the Lone Star of 70 cm may be more practical.

The 'Lone Star' needs hardly any attention. Plant it in well-draining soil and remove the old leaves at the bottom now and then. An extra layer of gravel around the base helps keep the roots dry during wet spells. If you choose a planter, go for a roomy, stable one with a drainage hole; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find models that can stay outside in winter too.
Feeding can be kept to a minimum: a dose of Pokon Garden Fertiliser in spring, and possibly in summer, is enough for healthy growth. Pruning is not necessary. Because it is so hardy, it can simply stay outdoors in winter. Do make sure the soil does not stay too wet, as wet roots are a bigger problem for a yucca than cold. Wear gloves for maintenance, as the leaf tips are sharp.

This yucca copes well with drought. In summer, water roughly once or twice a week when the soil is dry, and hardly water at all in winter. If in doubt, first feel a few centimetres into the soil. Prevent wet feet by ensuring good drainage.
