Product Description
The Yucca Filifera Australis is a tough palm lily with narrow, blue-green leaves. Fine white threads run along the edges, and that is where its nickname 'thread yucca' comes from. This yucca is winter hardy, so it can take a few knocks. With the look of a real desert plant, it is a great first step into the world of yuccas and palm lilies.
This yucca of 70 cm is still nice and manageable. You can easily put it in place yourself, and it keeps growing steadily over the years. It is compact enough for a large pot next to the front door. It also feels right at home in a border among other tough outdoor plants. If you want a bit more height straight away, there is also a Yucca Filifera Australis of 110 cm.
Care and tips for the Yucca Filifera Australis garden plant - 70 cm
This yucca is a rewarding, low-maintenance outdoor plant. Plant it in well-draining soil: mix garden soil or potting compost with some sand or gravel so that excess water can drain away quickly. If you go for a pot, choose one with a generous drainage hole and put a layer of gravel at the bottom. In our collection of outdoor pots and baskets you will find sturdy pots that can stay outside in winter too.
A yucca does not need much feeding. In spring and summer, give it some Pokon Organic Garden Fertiliser now and then for healthy growth. Pruning is not necessary: simply remove a spent or dried-out leaf at the bottom every now and then. This yucca is winter hardy and can stay outdoors all year round. The most important thing in winter is that the roots do not get too wet; a spot under an overhang helps with that.
Water needs of the Yucca Filifera Australis garden plant - 70 cm
As a true lover of dry conditions, this yucca needs little water. Feel the soil once a week: if it is completely dry, give it a splash of water until the soil is slightly moist. In a pot, the soil dries out faster in summer than in open ground. Above all, make sure there is good drainage so that no water is left standing in the pot in winter and freezes.
Light needs of the Yucca Filifera Australis garden plant - 70 cm
The sunnier, the better. A south- or west-facing spot in the garden or on the balcony is perfect: there it stays compact and the leaves get their most beautiful colour. It also tolerates partial shade, it just grows a little more slowly there.
Is the Yucca Filifera Australis garden plant - 70 cm toxic?
Touching it does no harm, but eating it does: the plant is mildly toxic if ingested. So keep it out of reach of nibbling pets and young children.
