Fargesia Nitida is a bamboo that grows neatly in clumps and does not spread. This value pack contains five plants of 170 cm. With them you plant a swaying, green privacy screen around your patio or seating area in one go. There is no need to put in a root barrier, and your neighbours simply keep their own garden.
Five plants are good for a compact hedge of about two metres. That lets you screen off a lounge corner or hide a shed from view. You can also dress up a bare fence with it. For a longer screen, the pack with 10 Fargesia Nitida plants is more practical. If you are after a single specimen plant, choose the single Fargesia Nitida of 170 cm. Care and tips for the 5 x Fargesia Nitida bamboo - 170 cm
Here's how to plant a dense hedge: stretch a string along the line you want and plant about two to three plants per running metre. With three plants per metre the hedge closes up fastest; with two plants each clump has a little more space and it takes slightly longer for the screen to fill in completely. Dig a generous planting hole for each plant, work humus-rich, moisture-retaining soil or compost into the ground and set the plants at the same depth as in their nursery pots. Water well after planting.
The Fargesia Nitida is hardy down to about -25 °C and easy to look after. In spring, scatter an organic fertiliser such as Pokon Organic Garden Fertiliser along the entire row so all the plants grow on evenly. Cut old or damaged canes back to ground level in spring. In frosty weather the leaves sometimes curl up a little: a natural form of protection that disappears by itself.
Water needs of the 5 x Fargesia Nitida bamboo - 170 cm
Bamboo loves soil that stays slightly moist, without water being left standing. In summer, water about twice a week, and more often in hot, dry weather. Curling leaves are a sign of thirst. A freshly planted hedge needs extra attention in its first year; a soaker hose along the row makes that a lot easier. In winter it needs very little water.

The Fargesia Nitida is happiest in partial shade. In a spot with harsh midday sun the leaves can start to curl. A spot sheltered from cold wind is ideal, for example along a fence, or combine the hedge with other outdoor plants that like partial shade.
