The coffee plant, also known as Coffea Arabica, comes originally from Ethiopia and belongs to the Rubiaceae family. There are as many as 60 different species! If you're patient and give this houseplant plenty of love and attention, it will reward you with coffee beans. Pick them, dry them, roast them, grind them and voilà: your own coffee. How brilliant is that?
Caring for the coffee plant is much like caring for a Ficus; it's an easy plant to look after.
How much water does the coffee plant - 15cm need?
As we said, the coffee plant is easy to look after, and it isn't fussy about where it stands or how it's watered. What matters is that the soil stays lightly moist; in the summer months your coffee plant will use more water than in winter. We recommend watering it several times with small amounts rather than one big splash, as it takes that up better. Brown leaf edges are often a sign of too much water. Check by feeling the soil and cut back on watering. Keep a close eye on the soil, especially in the early days, because watering differs from one coffee plant to the next and depends on a number of factors, such as humidity, position and room temperature.
How much light does the coffee plant need?
The coffee plant likes a bright, warm position, though direct sunlight won't do it any good. Put this houseplant somewhere out of the draught, which it doesn't cope with well and which makes it more prone to pests.
