Product Description

The Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix are bulbs of large-flowered crocuses in white, soft lilac, deep purple and warm yellow. The cup-shaped flowers are bigger than those of botanical crocuses and stand about 10 to 12 centimetres tall. Crocuses are strong, hardy bulbs that spread year after year into an ever larger carpet of flowers.

The bulbs are size 7/8 and each produce several flowers. Plant them in a pot or trough, at the front of the border, in the rock garden or scattered in the lawn and under trees, where they naturalise. With 30 bulbs you fill a pot or a small spot by the front door, with 60 bulbs a strip along the path. With 120 or 240 bulbs you create a flowering lawn or a blanket under trees; allow 100 to 150 bulbs per square metre. For a longer crocus season, combine them with earlier crocus bulbs, such as botanical species. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix?

Plant the Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix from mid-October to the end of November, as soon as the soil is below 10 °C. The bulbs then still form roots before the frost. If the ground does not freeze, you can still plant in December. Crocuses need a cold period to flower in early spring, so do not wait until spring.

When do the Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix flower?

The Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix flower from February to April, early after a mild winter and a little later after hard frost. Each bulb produces a few flowers in succession, so a group stays in flower for about two to three weeks. In the lawn and border they spread further every year, through cormlets and seed.

Care and tips Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix

Plant the corms pointed end up, about 8 centimetres deep, two to three times their height, and 5 to 8 centimetres apart. In the lawn, lift a piece of turf, place the bulbs underneath and press the turf back down. Crocuses grow in any well-drained garden soil, even poor soil. In a pot, make sure there is a hole in the base and a layer of gravel or clay pebbles; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a suitable size. Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow; only mow the lawn after about six weeks. A little bulb fertiliser in autumn helps them naturalise.

Water needs of the Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix

Crocuses in open ground hardly ever need extra water. Only after planting in a bone-dry autumn do you water once. In a pot or trough, keep the soil slightly moist as soon as the tips appear. Make sure the pot drains well, because the corms rot in wet soil.

Light needs of the Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix

The Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix want sun. Only in full sun do the cups open completely so you can see the heart of the flower. They also do well under deciduous trees, because the trees are still bare in February and March and enough light gets through.

Are the Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix toxic?

The Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the corms themselves. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. If you have sensitive skin, wear gloves when planting.

How will my Crocus bulbs Large Flowering mix be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
