The Ficus Benghalensis, also called the strangler fig, picked up that nickname thanks to its unique, slightly aggressive way of growing. In India the Ficus climbs up taller trees, strangles them as it were and lowers its roots to the ground. That way the Ficus takes its victim's place and can grow to great heights! In India the tree is sacred and goes by the name banyan tree.
