The Calathea Oppenheimiana is a special houseplant originating from the tropical regions of Brazil and Columbia. What makes this houseplant so special is that it really seems to 'live'. When the sun goes down, the leaves close themselves and open again when the morning sun comes. The Calathea owes its nickname 'Prayerplant' to this. The upward pointing leaves resemble a praying hand.
The Calathea Oppenheimiana is a tropical houseplant that likes a little higher humidity. When the humidity is too low it will lose its ornamental value, its leaves will develop brown spots and its colour will fade. Of course you want to prevent this! It is therefore a good idea to give the Calathea Oppenheimiana a helping hand by regularly watering it.
The Calathea Oppenheimiana likes a moist soil. Make sure that it does not stay wet for too long. Between waterings, the top layer of potting soil should not dry out; it is important that the soil always stays moist. Too much water can cause root rot and you want to prevent this of course. Therefore, keep a close eye on the soil (especially in the initial period). If you notice that the soil feels dry two days after watering, it is best to water a little more the next time. If, however, you notice that the soil is still very wet after five days, then it is better to give less water the next time you water.
The Calathea Oppenheimiana will do very well in normal daylight with mostly some shade. Direct sunlight is a real 'no go' for this plant, its leaves will fail and no new leaves will be produced.
The Calathea Oppenheimiana is not a poisonous houseplant, so you do not need to be careful with small children and pets.
