Product Description

The Tulip bulbs Greigii Red are bulbs of a low botanical tulip with deep fiery-red, cup-shaped flowers. Greigii tulips are also recognisable by their broad leaves with purple-brown stripes. They grow to around 20 to 30 centimetres tall and stand firm. In a low vase they also make lovely cut flowers.

The bulbs are size 11/12 and each produce one generous flower. Thanks to their low growth they are ideal for the front of the border, along the path and in pots and window boxes. With 15 bulbs you fill a pot of about 35 centimetres, with 30 bulbs a spot at the front of the border. With 60 or 120 bulbs you can plant a whole bed; allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other early-flowering tulip bulbs or place taller, later-flowering tulips behind them. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Tulip bulbs Greigii Red?

The best time to plant the Tulip bulbs Greigii Red is from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. The bulbs will then still form roots before winter without sprouting too early. As long as the ground is not frozen, you can plant until December. The bulbs need the winter cold to flower in March and April, so do not plant them in spring.

When do the Tulip bulbs Greigii Red flower?

The Tulip bulbs Greigii Red flower in March and April, earlier than most tulips. Each flower stays beautiful for about two weeks; in the sun the flowers open wide. In a pot in a warm spot they often flower a week earlier, after a cold spring a little later. In a sunny, dry spot Greigii tulips often return for several years, provided you let the foliage die back after flowering.

Care and tips Tulip bulbs Greigii Red

Plant the bulbs pointed end up, about 10 to 12 centimetres deep and 8 to 10 centimetres apart. Tulips like well-drained soil; if your garden stays wet, mix some sand into the soil. In a pot, give them a drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a suitable model. After flowering, only cut off the spent flower and leave the foliage until it turns yellow, so the bulb stores food for next year. A little bulb fertiliser in autumn or early spring is enough.

Water needs of the Tulip bulbs Greigii Red

In open ground the bulbs need little water. Only water after planting if the autumn is very dry. In a pot, water about once a week in spring as soon as the leaves appear. Never leave water standing in the saucer, because bulbs in wet soil will rot.

Light needs of the Tulip bulbs Greigii Red

Give them a sunny spot with at least six hours of sun a day. In full sun the stems stay strong and the flowers get their deepest red colour. In partial shade they flower too, but with slightly longer stems and less abundantly.

Are the Tulip bulbs Greigii Red toxic?

The Tulip bulbs Greigii Red are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb itself. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wear garden gloves when planting.

How will my Tulip bulbs Greigii Red be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
