Product Description
The Scilla bulbs Siberica are bulbs of the Siberian squill, a small bulbous plant with deep blue, star-shaped flowers that hang slightly nodding from the stem. The plants grow about 10 to 15 centimetres tall and carry several flowers per stem. This squill is fully hardy and naturalises easily.
The bulbs are size 7/8 and often produce several flower stems per bulb. They do well in pots and planters, at the front of the border and above all in the lawn and under trees, where they can naturalise undisturbed. With 50 bulbs you fill a few pots or a spot at the foot of a shrub, with 100 bulbs a blue edging along the path. With 200 or 400 bulbs you turn a piece of lawn or the ground under a group of trees blue; allow 100 to 150 bulbs per square metre. They combine beautifully with other naturalising bulbs that flower in early spring, such as yellow or white crocuses. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Scilla bulbs Siberica?
You plant the Scilla bulbs Siberica in autumn, ideally from mid-October to the end of November, when the soil is colder than 10 °C. The bulbs first put down roots, so they can grow on straight away in spring. If the ground is still open and frost-free in December, you can plant then too. Like other spring-flowering bulbs, they need a cold winter to flower; planting in spring therefore makes no sense.
When do the Scilla bulbs Siberica flower?
The Scilla bulbs Siberica flower in March and April. Each stem flowers for about two weeks, and because not all bulbs start at the same time, a group stays blue for three to four weeks. In a pot in a sheltered spot the first flowers often appear earlier, after a cold spring later. They multiply through offsets and readily self-seed, so the blue patches grow larger every year.
Care and tips Scilla bulbs Siberica
Plant the small bulbs pointed end up, about 8 centimetres deep, which is two to three times their height, and 5 to 8 centimetres apart. They grow in almost any garden soil, provided water can drain away well. In a pot, provide a drainage hole and a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a suitable pot. Let the foliage die back after flowering and only mow the lawn once it has turned yellow, so the seed can ripen too. Feeding is usually unnecessary; a layer of compost in autumn is enough.
Water needs of the Scilla bulbs Siberica
In open ground, rain is all they need; only in a bone-dry autumn do you water once after planting. In a pot, keep the soil lightly moist as soon as the first leaves appear. Make sure water never stands at the bottom of the pot, because the bulbs will then rot.
Light needs of the Scilla bulbs Siberica
The Scilla bulbs Siberica thrive best in partial shade, for example under deciduous trees and shrubs that still carry few leaves in March and April. A sunny spot is also suitable, as long as the soil there does not dry out completely.
Are the Scilla bulbs Siberica toxic?
The Scilla bulbs Siberica are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate the skin, so wear garden gloves when planting.
How will my Scilla bulbs Siberica be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
