Product Description
The Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix are bulbs of hyacinths in blue shades only, from soft lavender to deep cobalt blue. Each bulb forms a full, compact flower spike on a sturdy stem of around 20 to 30 centimetres. Hyacinths also stand out for their sweet fragrance.
The bulbs are size 14/15. They look lovely in a pot or planter by the front door or on the patio, where you enjoy the scent most, but also at the front of the border. With 10 bulbs you fill a pot of about 30 centimetres, with 20 bulbs a large planter or a spot in the border. With 40 or 80 bulbs you plant a blue bed or a strip along the path; allow 30 to 40 bulbs per square metre. For contrast, combine them with white or pink hyacinth bulbs. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix?
From mid-October to the end of November you put the Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix in the ground, once the soil has cooled below 10 °C. The bulbs first form roots and stay underground until spring. If you can only plant later, it works until December, as long as the ground is not frozen. The cold season is needed for flowering, so do not plant them in spring.
When do the Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix flower?
The Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix flower in March and April. A flower spike stays beautiful for about two to three weeks and is most fragrant in the first few days; they also do well in a vase. In a pot in a sheltered, sunny spot they open earlier, after a cold spring later. In the following years they return, although the spikes then become somewhat looser and sparser.
Care and tips Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix
Plant the bulbs pointed end up, about 12 to 15 centimetres deep, so two to three times the bulb height, with 10 to 15 centimetres between them. Hyacinths want airy, well-drained soil; improve heavy soil with some sand or compost. Always give a pot a drainage hole and a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom; you will find suitable models among our outdoor pots and baskets. After flowering, cut off the spent spike and leave the foliage until it is yellow. Some bulb fertiliser when the leaves emerge helps the bulb for next year.
Water needs of the Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix
After planting, the soil is usually moist enough; only in a dry autumn do you water once. In open ground, rain is sufficient after that. Water hyacinths in a pot as soon as the top few centimetres feel dry, about once a week in spring. Do not leave water in the saucer, or the bulb will rot.
Light needs of the Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix
Place them in the sun, with at least six hours of direct light a day. That keeps the stems short and strong and gives the flowers their finest blue. With less sun the stems grow longer and the heavy spikes topple over sooner.
Are the Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix toxic?
The Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The outer skin of the bulb can cause itching or irritation on sensitive skin, so wear garden gloves when planting them.
How will my Hyacinth bulbs Blue Water mix be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
