Product Description
The Flower bulb mix Colourful is a cheerful combination of diverse spring bulbs in all kinds of colours and flower shapes. Small, early bloomers stand alongside larger species, with heights of about 10 to 40 centimetres. With one mix you get a bright, varied spring garden of hardy bulbs that last for many years.
The bulbs are size 10/12. They do well in borders, in pots and planters, in the lawn and under trees and shrubs. With 125 bulbs you plant a few large planters or a spot of about one square metre, with 250 bulbs a colourful edge along the border. With 500 or 1000 bulbs you can colour a whole bed, a lawn or the ground beneath your trees; allow 75 to 100 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other flower bulb mixes, such as a single-colour mix as a calm accent. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Flower bulb mix Colourful?
The planting period for the Flower bulb mix Colourful runs from mid-October to the end of November. Wait until the soil is below 10 °C: the bulbs then form roots first and otherwise stay dormant. If the ground is still workable in December, you can plant then too. The bulbs need a cold winter to flower in spring.
When does the Flower bulb mix Colourful flower?
The Flower bulb mix Colourful flowers from March to May. The smallest bulbs open first, after which the larger species take over. Each flower stays attractive for about two weeks; the mix as a whole colours a large part of spring. In a pot in a sunny spot it starts earlier, after a cold spring later. In grass and under trees the bulbs naturalise and the clumps fill out every year.
Care and tips Flower bulb mix Colourful
An easy rule of thumb for planting depth is two to three times the height of the bulb: about 10 to 15 centimetres for the large and 5 to 8 centimetres for the small bulbs. Plant them 5 to 10 centimetres apart, preferably in loose groups for a natural effect. In the lawn, make the hole with a bulb planter or lift a piece of turf. The soil should drain well. Pots and planters get a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom; see our outdoor pots and baskets for a suitable one. Let the foliage turn yellow after flowering before you mow or tidy up. Scattering some bulb fertiliser in early spring is enough.
Water needs of the Flower bulb mix Colourful
Watering is rarely needed in the garden, as there is usually enough rain in autumn and spring. Only give a good soaking once during prolonged drought after planting. In pots and planters, check weekly in spring whether the soil is still moist. Do not leave water in the saucer; bulbs in wet soil rot.
Light needs of the Flower bulb mix Colourful
Place the mix in a sunny spot. Under deciduous trees works well too, because the trees are still bare in March and April and enough sun reaches the ground. In too much shade the stems become long and floppy.
Is the Flower bulb mix Colourful toxic?
The Flower bulb mix Colourful is mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. Plant and store the bulbs out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wear gloves while planting.
How will my Flower bulb mix Colourful be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
