Are olive trees hardy?

In long spells of frost, extra protection is worth having, certainly for young trees or an olive tree in a pot. By protecting the pot and trunk with a winter cover or bubble wrap, you prevent frost damage to the roots and trunk.
How big does an olive tree get?
An olive tree grows slowly and can eventually reach several metres tall, depending on its age, where it stands and how it's cared for. In a pot the tree stays more compact, which makes it ideal for a balcony or terrace. In a pot an olive tree will average 150 to 200 cm, while a tree planted in open ground can grow to a height of 3 to 5 metres. Older trees, such as bonsai olive trees, often have decades of growth behind them and give your garden instant character.

Putting an olive tree in a pot is a good idea. In a pot the tree is easier to keep to a manageable size and simple to move around. Just make sure you have:
