Product Description

The Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix are bulbs of Darwin hybrid tulips in a varied mixture of colours. This group is known for its large flower cups on sturdy, upright stems of around 50 to 60 centimetres. Darwin hybrids are strong tulips that also make good cut flowers.

The bulbs are size 10/12, a healthy size that produces a full-sized flower. This mix is meant for anyone who wants plenty of colour at a friendly price per bulb: you buy them in packs of 40, 80, 160 or 320. With 40 bulbs you fill two large pots on the patio or a generous group in the border. With 80 bulbs you plant a long strip along the path. With 160 bulbs you fill a bed of two to three square metres and with 320 bulbs a large bed or an entire front garden; allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other tulip bulbs, for example an early variety, so you have tulips from March to May. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix?

Plant the Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix in the period from mid-October to the end of November. The soil has then cooled to below 10 °C and the bulbs root calmly without coming up too early. As long as it is not freezing, you can still plant in December. Without winter cold there will be no flowers, so do not keep the bulbs until spring.

When do the Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix flower?

The Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix flower in April and May, in the second half of the tulip season. A flower lasts about two to three weeks. In a warm spot or in a pot you will see them earlier, after a chilly spring later. Let the foliage die back calmly after flowering and they can return for several years in a row.

Care and tips Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix

Place the bulbs pointed end up at a depth of 12 to 15 centimetres, about three times the bulb height, and keep roughly 10 centimetres between them. Tulips hate wet feet; on heavy soil, work some sand or compost into the top layer. For the large pots these tulips look so good in, have a look at our outdoor pots and baskets; always put a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom first. After flowering, cut off the spent cup and leave the foliage until it looks yellow. A light dose of bulb fertiliser in early spring helps the bulbs come back.

Water needs of the Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix

In open ground rain is enough; only during prolonged drought after planting do you water once. Tulips in pots get water about once a week from the moment the leaves are above the soil, without the compost becoming soaked. Pour away any water left in the saucer to prevent rot.

Light needs of the Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix

A spot in full sun, with six hours or more of direct light a day, is ideal. That keeps the stems sturdy and lets the large flowers colour up fully. In partial shade they still flower, but less freely and with longer, floppier stems.

Are the Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix toxic?

The Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. So keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin; with garden gloves you can plant without worry.

How will my Tulip bulbs Darwin Hybrid mix be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
