Product Description

The Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum are bulbs of the classic grape hyacinth that belongs in almost every spring garden. The little flowers are deep cobalt blue and sit like tiny bunches of grapes on short stems of about 15 to 20 centimetres. It is one of the easiest bulbs there is: they come back every year and keep increasing in number.

The bulbs are size 7/8, a good size for this species, and come in generous quantities per pack. That lets you think big: blue strips along the path, edges in the border, or whole areas of lawn and spots under trees that turn blue in spring. With 100 bulbs you plant a few pots and an edge at the front of the border, with 200 bulbs a ribbon several metres long. With 400 or 800 bulbs you create a blue river through the grass or under the trees; allow 100 to 150 bulbs per square metre. Add other naturalising bulbs, such as snowdrops or crocuses that flower earlier. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum?

The best period to plant the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum runs from mid-October to the end of November. The soil is then below 10 °C: warm enough to root, but too cold to sprout. If the ground is not yet frozen, you can still plant in December. A cold winter in the ground is needed for flowering, so there is no point in waiting until spring.

When do the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum flower?

In March and April the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum colour the garden blue. Each little cluster stays fresh for about two to three weeks. In a warm spot or in a pot they start earlier, after a long winter a little later. Because they form offsets and self-seed, a small group grows into a broad patch of blue within a few years.

Care and tips Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum

A planting depth of 7 to 9 centimetres, about three times the height of the bulb, is ideal; keep 5 to 7 centimetres between the bulbs. You can plant large numbers quickly in grass by folding back the turf with a spade, scattering the bulbs underneath and laying the turf back down. They grow in any garden soil that does not stay wet for long. Pots need a drainage hole and a thin layer of clay pebbles; see our outdoor pots and baskets. New leaves often appear in autumn; that is normal. After flowering, leave the foliage until it yellows. Feeding is not necessary.

Water needs of the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum

Watering grape hyacinths in open ground is rarely necessary. If they are in a pot or planter, keep the soil slightly moist in spring and let the top layer dry out in between. They do not tolerate wet feet.

Light needs of the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum

Grape hyacinths love sun. In full sun the plants stay compact and the clusters dense. They also flower in light shade under trees, although the stems become a little longer there.

Are the Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum toxic?

The Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum are mildly toxic if ingested. Store them out of reach of pets and young children until planting, and do not plant them where your dog likes to dig.

How will my Grape hyacinth bulbs Armeniacum be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
