Product Description
The Anemone bulbs Blanda mix are small tubers of the Grecian windflower in a blend of white, soft pink, deep blue and purple. The flowers resemble small daisies, with fine, feathery petals around a yellow centre. The plants grow to about 10 to 15 centimetres tall and form a low, colourful carpet in early spring.
The tubers are size 4/5 and look best in generous groups. Plant them under trees and shrubs, at the front of the border, in grass beneath a tree or in a pot in a sheltered spot. With 50 tubers you fill a few pots or an area of almost one square metre. With 100 or 200 you create a continuous edge under a hedge or group of shrubs, and with 400 tubers you lay a generous flowering carpet beneath trees; allow 50 to 75 per square metre. Combine them with other early flower bulbs, such as crocuses or small daffodils. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Anemone bulbs Blanda mix?
Plant the Anemone bulbs Blanda mix in autumn, preferably between mid-October and the end of November. The soil has then cooled to below 10 °C, so the tubers root steadily. Planting into December is still possible, provided the ground is not frozen. A spell of winter cold is needed for good flowering, so do not wait until spring.
When do the Anemone bulbs Blanda mix flower?
They flower in March and April, often while the trees are still bare. A planting stays in flower for three to four weeks, because new blooms keep opening. After a mild winter flowering starts earlier, after a harsh winter later. In a spot they like, the plants spread and self-seed, so the carpet becomes denser every year.
Care and tips Anemone bulbs Blanda mix
Soak the dried tubers overnight in lukewarm water before planting; this makes them swell and sprout sooner. Then plant them about 5 centimetres deep, two to three times the tuber height, with 5 to 8 centimetres between them. If you cannot tell which side is up, simply lay them flat; they will find their own way up. Loose, humus-rich soil with some leaf mould suits them best. In a pot, use good potting compost and a layer of clay pebbles; you will find suitable pots among our outdoor pots and baskets. After flowering, let the foliage die back naturally. Feeding is usually unnecessary.
Water needs of the Anemone bulbs Blanda mix
During growth and flowering in spring the plants like slightly moist soil. In summer they go dormant and the soil may be dry. In a pot, water in spring as soon as the top few centimetres feel dry, and make sure no water is left standing in the saucer.
Light needs of the Anemone bulbs Blanda mix
Partial shade or partial sun is ideal. Under deciduous trees and shrubs they get plenty of light in March and April, because the branches are not yet in leaf. In the full shade of evergreens they flower less.
Are the Anemone bulbs Blanda mix toxic?
The Anemone bulbs Blanda mix are mildly toxic if ingested. Plant and store the tubers out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate the skin, so wear gloves when planting.
