Product Description

The Allium bulbs Miami are bulbs of an ornamental onion with large, globe-shaped purple flower heads. The flowers are held high above the foliage on sturdy, straight stems, and the plant grows to around 60 centimetres. Bees and butterflies love them, and because the stems are so strong, Miami also makes a lovely cut flower for the vase.

The bulbs are size 10/+ and each produce one flower head. A single plant already stands out as a solitary among lower plants, but in a small group they look even better, in the border, along the path or in a pot or planter on the patio. With 15 bulbs you fill a large pot or a spot in the border, with 30 bulbs a strip along the path. With 60 or 120 bulbs you can plant a whole bed or scatter them through a long border; allow 20 to 30 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other allium bulbs, for example a white variety that flowers in the same weeks. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Allium bulbs Miami?

The best time to plant the Allium bulbs Miami is from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. The bulbs then still form roots before winter sets in, without coming up above ground. If it is not freezing yet, you can still plant in December. A cold period is needed for good flowering, so do not wait until spring.

When do the Allium bulbs Miami flower?

The Allium bulbs Miami flower from May into June, in the weeks between the last tulips and the first summer bloomers. Each flower head stays beautiful for about three weeks; after that, the faded globe remains decorative in the border for a long time. In a pot in a warm spot flowering often starts a little earlier, after a cold spring rather later. The bulbs return every year.

Care and tips Allium bulbs Miami

Plant the bulbs pointed end up, about 10 to 15 centimetres deep, which is two to three times the height of the bulb. Keep 15 to 20 centimetres between bulbs. Allium needs well-drained soil; on heavy clay, mix some sand or gravel into the planting holes. If you choose a pot, make sure it has a hole in the bottom and a layer of gravel or clay pebbles; you will find a suitable model among our outdoor pots and baskets. The foliage often starts to discolour while the plant is in flower. Place the bulbs among perennials that hide the leaves from view, and leave the foliage until it withers by itself. A handful of bulb fertiliser in early spring is enough.

Water needs of the Allium bulbs Miami

Allium needs little water and copes well with a drier spell. In open ground, only water if the spring is dry for a long time. In a pot, keep the soil slightly moist from the moment the leaves appear, watering about once a week. Too much water does more harm than too little, because the bulbs rot in wet soil.

Light needs of the Allium bulbs Miami

Miami belongs in full sun. In a sunny spot the stems stay strong and the purple colours best. In light partial shade the plant still flowers, but less profusely, and the stems then lean more towards the light.

Are the Allium bulbs Miami toxic?

The Allium bulbs Miami are mildly toxic if ingested, like other ornamental onions from the onion family. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. If you have sensitive skin, wear garden gloves when planting.

How will my Allium bulbs Miami be shipped?
