How do you care for an Epipremnum?

Epipremnum plants are easy to care for and grow well in spots with indirect light. They don't need much water: a little once a week is usually plenty. Make sure the soil dries out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.

The ideal amount of light for the Epipremnum

The Epipremnum is a houseplant that copes well with a range of light conditions, but it is happiest in a spot with bright indirect light. That means the plant likes being near a window, but not in direct sun, which would scorch its leaves.

Watering the Epipremnum

The Epipremnum likes slightly moist soil, but too much water can do harm. In spring and summer the plant needs watering about once a week. In autumn and winter you can cut that back to once every two weeks, because the plant grows more slowly then. Always check a little deeper into the soil first: if it feels dry, it's time to water. Make sure no water is left standing in the bottom of the pot, to prevent root rot. Has your plant been repotted? Then use a moisture meter to keep the moisture level right.

Although the Epipremnum doesn't need high humidity, you can mist the leaves lightly now and then to remove dust and keep the plant looking fresh. This is particularly useful in winter, when heating makes the air drier.

Plant food for the Epipremnum

In spring and summer, when the plant is growing actively, you can add a little liquid houseplant food to the water once every four to six weeks. Use ordinary houseplant food and follow the recommended dose on the packaging so you don't overfeed it.

In autumn and winter the Epipremnum is resting and doesn't need extra food. So stop feeding during this period, to avoid overloading the plant.

Can you take cuttings from this plant?

The Epipremnum is very easy to take cuttings from! You can propagate the plant by cutting off a stem with at least one leaf and an aerial root.

1. Cut it just below a leaf node. Make sure the cutting has an aerial root, because that is where the new roots grow from.
2. Put the cutting in water and place it somewhere bright, but out of direct sun.
3. Change the water every week.
4. Wait until the roots are at least 5 cm long. This usually takes two to four weeks.
5. Plant the cutting in potting soil and care for it like any other Epipremnum.
