The best care for your houseplants in summer
The best care for your houseplants in summer
With more sunlight, higher temperatures and often dry air indoors, your green collection could do with some help to stay fresh and healthy through the summer. Curious how to give your plants the best care this summer? We are sharing handy tips to keep your plants glowing, from smart watering habits to the right spot in the house. That way you can enjoy a lovely green summer together!
Give your plants extra water
Let's start with something we pay plenty of attention to ourselves in summer: drinking enough water! You obviously don't want your green oasis drying out, so keep a close eye on the soil in your pots. A handy tip: stick your finger into the potting soil every now and then, yes, really! That is the best way to feel whether the soil is still moist enough. Do watch out that your plants don't end up with wet feet, because they have not passed their swimming certificate! And misting the leaves a couple of times a week? They love that.
Moving house: no sunburn, please!
Your plant might normally be perfectly happy on the windowsill, but in summer it can be wise to move it a little further away from the window. Sun coming through the glass can get extra strong, and that can even scorch the leaves. We don't want your plant losing its green shine, do we? So move your plants somewhere they are out of direct sunlight for a while.
Extra plant food for growth
In summer your green rascals could do with a bit of extra feeding. And no, we don't mean chips with mayo and a veggie burger (however good that sounds!). Plant food is what they need. Give them some plant food about once every two weeks to support that summer growth spurt. Do read the instructions so that you give the right amount. Too much plant food can stress your plants out as well.
Time to take cuttings!
Summer is the perfect time to take cuttings! If you have not done it yet, now is definitely worth it for making a few babies from your plant. It may even be better to do this before the hottest months, so the cuttings have plenty of time to grow. But better late than never! Do pick a spot where the cuttings are out of full sun, because those little leaves often cannot cope with it yet. That gives your cuttings the best chance of becoming beautiful, big plants.
Hopefully these tips help your green friends come through the summer healthy and happy! Now pour yourself a nice glass of water and enjoy your own summery, tropical mini jungle.
