Product Description

The Tulip bulbs Mata Hari are bulbs of a tulip with pink cups that softly blend into white. Thanks to that colour transition, each flower looks slightly different depending on the light. They grow to around 45 centimetres tall on sturdy stems, so they stand nicely upright in the border and last a long time in the vase.

The bulbs are size 11/12 and each produce one generous flower. They look lovely in the border, along the path or in a pot or planter on the patio. With 12 bulbs you fill a pot of about 30 centimetres, with 24 bulbs a large pot or a spot in the border. With 48 or 96 bulbs you can plant a whole bed; allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other tulip bulbs that flower at the same time, such as white or soft pink tulips that echo the colours of the flower. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Tulip bulbs Mata Hari?

The best time to plant the Tulip bulbs Mata Hari is from mid-October to the end of November, once the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. The bulbs will then still form roots before winter without sprouting too early. As long as the ground is not frozen, you can plant until December. The bulbs need the winter cold to flower in April and May, so do not plant them in spring.

When do the Tulip bulbs Mata Hari flower?

The Tulip bulbs Mata Hari flower in April and May. Each flower stays beautiful for about two to three weeks. In a pot in a warm spot they often flower a week earlier, after a cold spring a little later. If you let the foliage die back after flowering, they will return next spring.

Care and tips Tulip bulbs Mata Hari

Plant the bulbs pointed end up, about 12 to 15 centimetres deep and 8 to 10 centimetres apart. Tulips like well-drained soil; if your garden stays wet, mix some sand into the soil. In a pot or planter, give them a drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles; among our outdoor pots and baskets you will find a suitable model. For the vase, cut the stems when the bud is just showing colour. After flowering, only cut off the spent flower and leave the foliage until it turns yellow, so the bulb stores food for next year. A little bulb fertiliser in autumn or early spring is enough.

Water needs of the Tulip bulbs Mata Hari

In open ground the bulbs need little water. Only water after planting if the autumn is very dry. In a pot, water about once a week in spring as soon as the leaves appear. Never leave water standing in the saucer, because bulbs in wet soil will rot.

Light needs of the Tulip bulbs Mata Hari

Give them a sunny spot with at least six hours of sun a day. In full sun the stems stay strong and the pink shows at its best. In partial shade they flower too, but with slightly longer stems and less abundantly.

Are the Tulip bulbs Mata Hari toxic?

The Tulip bulbs Mata Hari are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb itself. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wear garden gloves when planting.

How will my Tulip bulbs Mata Hari be shipped?
