Product Description
The Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix are bulbs of the Spanish bluebell in a mix of shades, such as blue, purple, pink and white. Sturdy stems carry spikes of bell-shaped flowers above glossy, strap-shaped leaves. The plants grow to about 30 to 40 centimetres tall. It is a strong, hardy naturaliser that gives bees and butterflies an early meal.
The bulbs are size 7/8. They are made for the partial shade under shrubs and trees, but also suit the border or large pots, and a few stems in the vase look lovely. With 40 bulbs you fill a large pot or a spot under a shrub, with 80 bulbs a generous group in the border. With 160 or 320 bulbs you can colour an entire woodland edge or the ground under your trees; allow 40 to 60 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other naturalising bulbs, such as camassias, which follow on in May and June. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix?
The Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix go into the ground in autumn, preferably from mid-October to the end of November. Once the soil is colder than 10 °C, the bulbs root without sprouting prematurely. December still works too, as long as there is no frost in the ground. Plant the bulbs soon after they arrive, as they dry out easily. Without winter cold the flowering will not get going, so do not wait until spring.
When do the Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix flower?
The Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix flower in April and May. A flower spike stays attractive for two to three weeks, with the bells opening from the bottom upwards. In a sheltered spot or in a pot flowering can start earlier; after a cold spring it takes a little longer. Bluebells naturalise easily through offsets and seed, so the groups become denser every year.
Care and tips Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix
Plant the bulbs 8 to 10 centimetres deep, two to three times the height of the bulb, and keep about 10 centimetres between them. Humus-rich soil with some leaf mould is ideal; the bulbs must not stand in water for long. If you put them in a large pot, make sure there are holes in the base and a layer of gravel; you will find roomy models among our outdoor pots and baskets. If you do not want them to self-seed, cut off the spent spikes. Leave the foliage until it has yellowed. Extra fertiliser is usually not needed.
Water needs of the Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix
Bluebells like soil that stays slightly moist in spring. In the garden, rain usually takes care of that; only water if April and May stay dry for a long time. In a pot, check the soil a few times a week during growth. A wet pot without drainage makes the bulbs rot.
Light needs of the Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix
Partial shade is the ideal position. Under deciduous trees and shrubs they get plenty of light in early spring and shelter later on. They also grow in full sun, provided the soil does not dry out.
Are the Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix toxic?
The Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulbs. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children.
How will my Spanish bluebell bulbs Hispanica mix be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
