The coffee plant, better known as Coffea Arabica, originally comes from Ethiopia and belongs to the Rubiaceae plant family. There are as many as 60 different species of coffee plant. If you have enough patience and give this houseplant plenty of love and attention, it will reward you with coffee beans. Pick them, dry them, roast them, grind them and voila: your own coffee. How brilliant is that?

Caring for the coffee plant is much like caring for a Ficus: it's an easy plant to look after.
How much water does the Coffea Arabica - 15cm need?
As we said, the coffee plant is easy to look after, and it isn't fussy about where it stands or how it's watered. What matters is that the soil is always slightly moist. In the summer months your coffee plant will get through more water than it does in winter. We recommend giving it small amounts of water several times over, because it takes that up better than one big splash at once. Brown leaf edges are often a sign of too much water: feel the soil to check, then water less. Keep a close eye on the soil, especially in the first few weeks. How much water a coffee plant needs differs from plant to plant and depends on things like humidity, position and room temperature. If the soil already feels a little dry two days after watering, give a bit more next time. If it's still very wet after five days, give a bit less.
How much light does the Coffea Arabica - 15cm need?
The coffee plant likes a bright, warm spot, though direct sunlight won't do it any good. Keep this houseplant out of draughts, which it really can't handle and which make it more prone to pests. Brown leaves can point to a spot that's too cold or too draughty, so move it somewhere else to keep your coffee plant healthy.
Is the Coffea Arabica - 15cm toxic?
The coffee plant is not toxic at all, to people or animals, but we'd still advise you not to eat the leaves or the unprocessed fruits, or to use them in food. The fruits of the coffee plant are perfectly usable once they've been properly treated.
