How do I care for my Peperomia?

How much light the Peperomia needs

The Peperomia likes bright, indirect light, but copes well with less light too. Direct sun will scorch the leaves, so it is best to put the plant somewhere the sunlight is filtered, such as near a window with curtains. Too much shade will make the plant grow slowly, so look for a balance: plenty of light, without the plant standing in direct sun.

Watering the Peperomia

The Peperomia doesn't need much water. Let the top layer of soil feel dry before you water again. In the winter months the plant may need watering less often. A sign that your Peperomia has had too much water is leaves that turn yellow and feel soft. If the leaves wilt or the edges turn brown, that can be a sign the plant hasn't had enough. Ideally, measure the soil moisture with a moisture meter.

Feeding the Peperomia

During the growing season (spring and summer) the Peperomia needs a little extra food roughly every month to grow well. Use a liquid houseplant food and check the amount needed carefully. In autumn and winter the plant needs no food at all, so you can stop feeding during this period. Feeding it then can actually do harm!

Taking cuttings from the Peperomia

The Peperomia is easy to propagate from cuttings, which makes it an ideal plant for growing new ones. Cut off a healthy stem with a leaf and put it in water, or plant it straight into soil. After a few weeks roots will start to grow and you can pot the cutting up.

Repotting the plant

The Peperomia doesn't need repotting often, but it is important to do it every 1 to 2 years, particularly once the plant starts outgrowing its pot. Peperomias are generally fairly fast growers, certainly when they are happy. You can tell when the roots come out of the drainage holes, or when the plant looks very top-heavy. Choose a decorative pot that is 2-3 cm bigger all round than the previous one, so the roots have enough room to grow. Make sure you use a free-draining potting soil to prevent root rot.
