Keep in mind that the plant slows down as it gets older, especially if it is not getting enough light or plant food. If you want your plant to grow at its best, turn it regularly so it catches sunlight evenly.
Caring for the Ficus Lyrata
The Ficus Lyrata is not a difficult plant to look after. With the right attention you can enjoy this beauty for years:
- Watering: the fiddle leaf fig needs water weekly, and the soil should stay slightly moist. Make sure the top layer of soil is dry before you water again, to prevent root rot.
- Pruning: prune the plant in spring or summer to keep its shape and encourage growth. Remove dead or damaged leaves and shorten long branches to make the plant fuller.
- Position: the Ficus Lyrata loves bright indirect light. Ideally, place it near an east- or west-facing window. Avoid draughts and sudden changes in temperature. The plant likes high humidity, so misting the leaves with a plant mister is ideal.
- Plant food: during the growing season (spring and summer) the plant needs plant food every month. In autumn and winter extra feeding is not needed, because the plant is resting.
