Product Description

The Tulip bulbs Sylvestris are bulbs of the woodland tulip, a wild tulip with graceful, golden-yellow cups. The buds nod slightly at first and straighten up as soon as the flower opens; in the sun the pointed petals spread out like a star. The plants grow to around 30 to 40 centimetres tall. This botanical tulip is strong and keeps coming back for years, something you cannot always say of cultivated tulips.

The bulbs are size 5/6. They feel at home under trees and shrubs, in a natural border or on a sunny edge of the lawn, and also look lovely in a pot on the patio. With 20 bulbs you fill a pot of about 30 centimetres, with 40 bulbs a spot under a shrub. With 80 or 160 bulbs you lay the foundation for a yellow strip that spreads further year after year; allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other botanical tulip bulbs, such as low-growing species in white or red. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Tulip bulbs Sylvestris?

Put the Tulip bulbs Sylvestris in the ground between mid-October and the end of November, when the soil temperature is below 10 °C. The bulbs then root in peace without starting to grow too early. If the ground stays workable, planting into December is no problem. The winter frost is needed to trigger flowering, so spring planting makes no sense.

When do the Tulip bulbs Sylvestris flower?

The Tulip bulbs Sylvestris flower in March and April. A flower stays attractive for about two weeks and closes in the evening and in cloudy weather. In a pot or in a sheltered, warm spot they open a little earlier, after a cold late winter later. As a naturalising bulb they form runners with new bulblets, so more yellow flowers appear every spring.

Care and tips Tulip bulbs Sylvestris

Plant the bulbs about 10 centimetres deep, pointed end up, and leave 8 to 10 centimetres between them. Woodland tulips grow in almost any soil as long as it is not wet for long periods; in heavy clay, some coarse sand or grit in the planting hole helps. In a pot, too, a drainage layer is important; take a look at our outdoor pots and baskets. Let the foliage die back completely after flowering and do not mow or prune around it before then, so the bulbs can spread. Feeding is hardly necessary; a handful of compost in autumn is enough.

Water needs of the Tulip bulbs Sylvestris

In the garden the bulbs manage on rainwater. After planting, only water in an exceptionally dry autumn. In a pot, keep the compost lightly moist once the leaves appear, watering about once a week. After flowering the soil may stay somewhat drier, because the bulbs are then resting.

Light needs of the Tulip bulbs Sylvestris

A position in partial shade or partial sun is ideal, for example under deciduous trees that still let light through in March and April. The more sun the flowers get on the day, the wider they open. In a very dark spot they flower less.

Are the Tulip bulbs Sylvestris toxic?

The Tulip bulbs Sylvestris are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin; garden gloves prevent this.

How will my Tulip bulbs Sylvestris be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
