Product Description

The Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii are bulbs of the giant snowdrop, with white nodding bells that are larger than those of the common snowdrop. The inner petals carry fine green markings. The plants grow to around 15 to 20 centimetres tall and have broad, grey-green leaves. They brave snow and frost and are often the first flowers of the year.

The bulbs are size 5/6. They are at their best under trees and shrubs, in the lawn or at the front of the border, but a pot or container by the front door also looks lovely with them. With 25 bulbs you fill a pot or a small spot under a shrub, with 50 bulbs a generous clump in the border. With 100 or 200 bulbs you create a white carpet under trees or in the grass; allow 50 to 100 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with other early flower bulbs, such as winter aconites or crocuses. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii?

Plant the Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii in autumn, between mid-October and the end of November, when the soil is colder than 10 °C. As long as it is not freezing, you can still plant in December. Snowdrop bulbs dry out quickly, so ideally put them in the ground soon after they arrive. They need a cold period to set their flowers; planting in spring makes no sense.

When do the Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii flower?

The Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii flower in the middle of winter, from January to March. Thanks to the cold, a flower stays attractive for three to four weeks. After a mild winter or in a pot against a wall they appear earlier; in hard frost they pause and then simply carry on. In a spot they like, they spread through offsets and seed, so you see more bells every year.

Care and tips Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii

Plant the small bulbs nose up at a depth of 5 to 8 centimetres, with about 5 to 8 centimetres between them; loose groups look most natural. Humus-rich soil that does not dry out in summer is ideal; leaf mould or fallen leaves do them good. For a pot, choose a model with drainage holes and a layer of gravel, for example from our outdoor pots and baskets. Let the foliage die back quietly after flowering and only mow the lawn once the leaves have turned yellow, usually about six weeks later. Extra fertiliser is not needed.

Water needs of the Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii

In the garden the bulbs usually get enough rain in winter and spring. They like soil that stays slightly moist, even during their summer rest, but dislike standing in water. Keep a pot evenly moist during the growing season, without leaving water in the saucer.

Light needs of the Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii

Partial shade suits these snowdrops best. Under deciduous trees and shrubs they are perfectly placed: there they get light in winter and protection from strong sun in summer. The giant snowdrop tolerates a little more sun than the common one, as long as the soil does not dry out.

Are the Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii toxic?

The Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii are mildly toxic if ingested, especially the bulb. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children.

How will my Snowdrop bulbs Elwesii be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
