Product Description

The Crocus bulbs Species mix are a mixed selection of botanical crocuses. They have small, graceful flowers in mixed colours, such as white, lilac, yellow and violet, and stay low to the ground at around 7 to 10 centimetres. Botanical crocuses are tough and hardy, are among the first flowers of the year and provide bees and butterflies with an early source of pollen and nectar.

The corms are size 5/6: small, but each good for several flowers. They look lovely at the front of the border, in pots and planters, in the rock garden and above all in grass, where they can seed freely. With 50 bulbs you fill two or three pots or a little spot by the patio, with 100 bulbs an edge along the border. For a lawn or a strip of grass under the fruit trees, choose 200 or 400 bulbs; you need 100 to 150 corms per square metre. To extend the flowering, combine them with large-flowered crocus bulbs, which open just a little later. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Crocus bulbs Species mix?

The right moment to plant the Crocus bulbs Species mix is between mid-October and the end of November, when the soil has cooled to below 10 °C. The corms then still form roots but only come up after winter. If there is no frost, you can keep planting into December. Without winter cold crocuses will not flower, so do not save them for spring.

When do the Crocus bulbs Species mix flower?

The Crocus bulbs Species mix flower from February to April. Because the species in the mix do not all open at once, a group stays in flower for three to four weeks; a single flower lasts about a week. After a mild winter they start earlier, after a long frost later. Year after year they increase through seed and new cormlets.

Care and tips Crocus bulbs Species mix

Place the corms about 5 to 7 centimetres deep, which is two to three times their height, pointed end up and some 4 to 6 centimetres apart. Ordinary garden soil that does not stay waterlogged is enough for them. A pot needs a drainage hole and a layer of clay pebbles or gravel at the bottom; take a look at our outdoor pots and baskets for a suitable model. Let the foliage die back after flowering and do not mow the grass until six weeks later, so seed can ripen too. Feeding is hardly necessary; a little compost or bulb fertiliser in autumn is sufficient.

Water needs of the Crocus bulbs Species mix

Watering these crocuses in the garden is rarely needed, as autumn and winter rain is more than enough. If it stays dry for weeks after planting, water thoroughly once. In pots and planters, check now and then in spring that the soil is not drying out. Do make sure no water is left standing, because the corms do not cope well with wet feet.

Light needs of the Crocus bulbs Species mix

Give the Crocus bulbs Species mix a sunny spot. Botanical crocuses only open their flowers when the sun is on them. A place under deciduous shrubs or trees also works, as long as there is plenty of light there in early spring.

Are the Crocus bulbs Species mix toxic?

The Crocus bulbs Species mix are mildly toxic if ingested; this applies mainly to the corms. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. Garden gloves prevent the sap from irritating sensitive skin.

How will my Crocus bulbs Species mix be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
