Product Description
The Hyacinth bulbs mix are bulbs of garden hyacinths in a colourful blend. Each bulb produces one compact flower spike full of small, star-shaped bells, reaching about 20 to 25 centimetres in height. Hyacinths are among the most fragrant spring bloomers.
Size 14/15 means sturdy bulbs that produce full, dense spikes. Plant them in groups in the border, in a row along the garden path or in troughs and pots on the patio. With 10 bulbs you create a fragrant pot of around 30 centimetres, with 20 bulbs a colourful group in the border or a long balcony box. With 40 or 80 bulbs you fill an entire bed; allow 30 to 40 bulbs per square metre. A few spikes in a vase bring the scent of spring indoors too. If you want one colour to stand out more, add single-colour hyacinth bulbs to the mix. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.
When should you plant the Hyacinth bulbs mix?
The Hyacinth bulbs mix are best planted from mid-October to the end of November. The soil has then cooled to below 10 °C, so the bulbs can quietly form roots without producing leaves yet. If the weather stays mild, you can keep planting into December, as long as the ground is not frozen. The winter cold is needed to trigger flowering, so planting in spring makes no sense.
When do the Hyacinth bulbs mix flower?
The Hyacinth bulbs mix are in flower in March and April. Each spike lasts about two to three weeks. In a sheltered, warm spot or in a pot they often flower a little earlier; if a cold spring follows, flowering shifts slightly later. If you leave the bulbs in place after flowering, they return every year, though with slightly looser spikes than in the first year.
Care and tips Hyacinth bulbs mix
Plant the bulbs pointed end up at a depth of 10 to 15 centimetres, about two to three times the height of the bulb, and keep 10 to 15 centimetres between them. Hyacinths want soil that drains water well. Drainage matters in a pot too: a hole in the base and a layer of gravel or clay pebbles stop water from standing. For a suitable pot, take a look at our outdoor pots and baskets. After flowering, remove only the flower spike; let the foliage die back, because that is how the bulb recharges. Scatter some bulb fertiliser in early spring.
Water needs of the Hyacinth bulbs mix
Bulbs in open ground usually manage with rainfall. If the autumn is dry, give one generous can of water after planting. In pots and troughs the soil dries out faster: from the moment the buds appear, water about once a week, more often in sun and wind. Make sure excess water can drain away.
Light needs of the Hyacinth bulbs mix
A sunny position is ideal for the Hyacinth bulbs mix. If they get six hours of sun or more, the spikes stay compact and their colours are bright. They also flower in partial shade, although the stems become longer and the spikes topple over sooner.
Are the Hyacinth bulbs mix toxic?
The Hyacinth bulbs mix are mildly toxic if ingested, particularly the bulb. Plant and store them out of reach of pets and young children. Handling the bulbs can make your skin itch; garden gloves prevent this.
How will my Hyacinth bulbs mix be shipped?
Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
