Product Description

The Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs are extra-large bulbs of the poet's daffodil Recurvus, also known as pheasant's eye. The snow-white petals curve slightly backwards, so the small, flat cup in the centre stands out nicely. The plants grow to about 35 to 40 centimetres tall.

These bulbs are size 12/14, one size larger than the regular Recurvus. Large bulbs have stored more food; this gives strong plants with bigger flowers and often more than one flower stem per bulb in the very first spring. With 10 bulbs you fill a pot of about 30 centimetres, with 20 bulbs a group in the border. With 40 or 80 bulbs you plant a strip along the path or a stretch of grass under trees; allow 30 to 50 bulbs per square metre. Combine them with early daffodil bulbs so the daffodil season lasts longer. You will find more greenery for outdoors among our outdoor plants.

When should you plant the Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs?

The best period to plant the Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs runs from mid-October to the end of November. The soil is then colder than 10 °C, so the bulbs form roots but do not sprout yet. If the ground is not frozen, you can carry on into December. Without winter cold there will be no flowers, so do not wait until spring to plant them.

When do the Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs flower?

The Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs flower in March and April. As a poet's daffodil, Recurvus is one of the later daffodils, so the peak is usually in April; after a cold spring flowering can continue into May. A flower stays beautiful for about two weeks, and in a pot in a warm spot flowering starts earlier. They are also suitable as cut flowers; give them water separately for a night before combining them with other flowers. If you leave the foliage after flowering, they return every year and naturalise in grass and under trees.

Care and tips Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs

Because of their size, you plant these bulbs a little deeper than average: about 15 centimetres, pointed end up and 10 to 12 centimetres apart. Poet's daffodils also tolerate somewhat heavier soil, as long as water does not stand on it. In a pot, first add a drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles; you will find a suitable one among our outdoor pots and baskets. After flowering, cut away the faded flowers and leave the foliage for six weeks so the bulb can recharge. A little bulb fertiliser in early spring keeps flowering at its best.

Water needs of the Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs

Poet's daffodils like soil that does not dry out in spring. In open ground rain is usually sufficient; only give extra water during prolonged drought while they are growing. In a pot, water about once a week from the moment the shoots appear. Excess water must be able to drain away, because the bulbs rot in a full saucer.

Light needs of the Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs

A spot in the sun gives the finest flowering and the sturdiest stems. Light shade under deciduous trees also works well, because those trees still carry few leaves in spring.

Are the Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs toxic?

The Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs are toxic if ingested, with the highest concentration in the bulb. Keep them out of reach of pets and young children. Wear garden gloves when planting and cutting, as the sap can irritate the skin.

How will my Daffodil bulbs Recurvus XL bulbs be shipped?

Your bulbs are carefully packed and shipped. That way they arrive safely and fresh from the grower.
